Epic Adventures Since 1992

Your Time is Precious.

Make It
Extraordinary.

Most people come to the Rockies for what's above, but only the curious few discover what lies beneath. Rat's Nest Cave stretches four kilometres under Grotto Mountain — carved from ancient limestone and shaped by glaciers. Home to fossils, pictographs, and formations that took millennia to grow, it's an experience that stands the test of time.

Whatever you came to the Rockies for, this will be the part you talk about when you get home.

Real Adventure

You're heading into a real, undeveloped natural cave — no walkways, no fixed lighting, no handrails. You'll be dressed in high-quality caving equipment and teamed up with one of our experienced cave guides for an experience that is uncommonly wild.

Year-Round, Rain or Shine

Mountain weather is unpredictable - unless you're IN the mountain. The Cave is always 5°C. There's no rain, no wind, no snow and no sun, so we can explore the cave any day of the year. TL;DR: We almost never cancel because of weather, so plan with confidence.

A Complete Experience

Most guests are surprised by how much there is to discover down there — the geology, the fossils, the stories your guide brings to life around every corner. The physical challenge is real, but so is the sense that almost anyone, with the right guide and the right attitude, can do this.

The tour was a once in a lifetime experience, John was an amazing guide, and the journey was unforgettable. That said, the one critique of Canmore Cave Tours is that they were TOO accommodating of disrespectful guests which in turn dampened the entire experience and presented safety hazards. ~~ Our slot was 11:45am for the adventure tour and rule one was to arrive 10 minutes early. We were told the rest of the group was running late to arrive. (No problem at all). Once everyone arrived around 12pm and got geared up, we were told to head outside to our cars and John the guide would be out in 5-10 minutes to guide all of our cars up the road to the hike/cave parking lot. Everyone gets in their car to wait for John- and after 5 minutes the other car holding the rest of the group- DRIVES AWAY (later we found out they decided to drive to a coffee shop). Truly, no exaggeration, we are about to follow the guide to the cave- the tour has already started- and the same people who arrived late- drove away WITH the canmore gear, to a coffee shop somewhere in town. John comes out, we are all confused- he gets in his car and drives himself and leads our car 5 minutes up the road to the cave parking lot. Once we arrive, John tells us he unfortunately must drive back to the office and pick up the coffee goers who returned to the office with food and coffee and now need a guide to direct them to the cave location. John tells us disheartened that we'll have to wait 10+ minutes while he drives back to the office, finds them, and brings them to us. The reason this entire experience was an issue is that the waiver instructions were clear about arriving early, they were also clear about considering skipping coffee due to bathroom restraints, and when the tour began and the group was given their first instruction to wait outside- they drove away with Canmore gear and we and Canmore had no idea where they had gone. There were three red flags of not following a single instruction- and due to Canmore's over-accommodations- we began the hike an hour and 15 minutes late, we were uncomfortable/concerned with how they would follow instructions while caving which was a safety issue, and the disrespect of the other guests dampened our excitement and it appeared to dampen our tour guides excitement initially as well which weakened the overall experience. ~~ In conclusion- this tour IS amazing, and our recommendation is to book the EARLIEST time slot available with the hopes that you avoid disrespectful guests you must spend 6 hours with. The recommendation to Canmore in the future is to take actions like this seriously, and to give disrespectful guests a refund and tell them they unfortunately cannot join the tour if they are literally not physically present during the tour. (I also want to make SUPER clear this has NOTHING to do with John, but rather Canmore policy. John was the only reason our day and experience was still unforgettable! John remained calm and focused, and his knowledge and expertise made us eventually feel safe despite the other guests. Give this man a promotion!)

Adam and Gabrielle were excellent tour guides as we took the 4.5hr tour. It was challenging yet awe inspiring to say the least. Recommend to anyone who likes adventure, nature and some good friendship.

An excellent, out-of-this-world day and John was an awesome guide who made us feel safe, confident, and well-informed throughout!

John and Nate were phenominal guides. John's storytelling and relaxed attitude were complimented well by Nate's geological knowledge. Both were very familiar with north American caving, and were able to answer questions beyond the scope that we expected. Both were truly knowledgeable.

Great experience and our guide Annie was excellent. Very patient and very attuned to how we were doing at all points of the cave tour. Great workout that was about 4 hours long and all in our party were happy it wasn’t a 4 hr 10min tour. Would highly recommend to anyone wanting to experience being deep in Mother Earth.
